Fish tank gravel is one of the most common elements in virtually all aquariums in the world. Also commonly referred to as substrate, the kind of gravel you choose can have a substantial impact not only on the visual appeal of your tank but also the well-being of your fresh/salty water fish and any live plants you place in the habitat.

In a select few tanks, some people prefer to have no gravel at all. However, most pet fish keepers settle for some colored stones (gravel) as a substrate for their tanks. Given that the substrate isn’t as easy to change as other accessories in your fish tank, it will be useful to take some time to think over the type and color of your substrate.

What is the purpose of gravel (substrate) in a fish tank

  1. The gravel substrate acts as a medium/surface on which beneficial bacteria colonize and grow.
  2. It is also a medium for live plants to take root/anchor and draw nutrients.
  3. It offers a more natural habitat for the fish, (particularly important for fish that like to burrow)
  4. Serves as a food reservoir for bottom-dwelling species enjoy rooting in the substrate for tidbits of food that have fallen there.
  5. It also makes fish feel safer, as it does not reflect images of the other fish in the tank as glass can.
  6. For some species of fish that scatter their eggs on the bottom of the tank, the substrate makes them less noticeable to potential scavengers/predators, giving you a chance to increase your stock.
  7. The substrate contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of the aquarium.
